Murder Calls at Borallon Correctional Centre

Queensland State Government managed facility Borallon Correctional Centre is in the spotlight this week after the weekend incident that has left one Prisoner dead and his cell mate facing an extended stay.

Queensland's Courier Mail reported that "Prisoner Nick Triggs, 27, was found lifeless in his cell on Sunday morning at Borallon jail."

The Courier Mail also reports "the person he was sharing a cell with, Glenn Ryan Clarke, 42, has been charged with murder and appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court yesterday."

The incident could not have come at a worse time for the State Government as they are under the eye of the State LNP Opposition and the voting public after taking back the private operating contract for Arthur Gorrie and Southern Queensland Correctional Centres.

The family of the deceased Prisoner cite the overcrowding issues that are plaguing Queensland Prisons as the cause for murder.

The Australian Prison Officers Association said "this is a human tragedy that many of our members predicted. The overcrowding of Queensland Prisons is leading to increased tensions with the Prison system and sadly, this will mean that the internal Prison crimes of violence are almost certain to rise and continue to rise until there is a change in the way we manage Prisoners in Queensland."

This State Government Can't Handle the Truth

The truth is the Queensland State Government can't handle the truth.

The Queensland State Government is in no shape to be taking possession of the two privately operated prisons in Queensland because they can't provide the staffing levels in existing facilities to help prevent these kinds of violent crimes.

Our members and Prison Officers throughout Australia have been calling for reviews into staffing levels for years and now we see another death in a Queensland Prison that might have been prevented if the staffing levels were better.

The Australian Prison Officers Association has spoken to our members at Borallon Correctional Centre and there will be further talks to address the ongoing safety concerns over the coming days.
