GEO and Serco Loose Queensland Prison Contracts

In a shock move (for some), GEO and Serco Prison Officers wake this morning to the news that the private contracts held by their employers will go and administration of the two prisons under their control at Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre and South East Queensland Correctional Centre will be absorbed to the already understaffed and over-stretched Queensland State Government's Corrective Services Department.

Queensland Police and Corrective Services Minister Mark Ryan made the announcement to the media and Prison Officers are left scratching their heads wondering about the certainty of their futures.

Prison Officers have told the Australian Prison Officers Association that they feel as though they have been sold out by the United Voice Union.

Brian Newman from the Australian Prison Officers Association said "monopolies are not good in any industry and, whilst it is true that there are benefits to the announcement for staff in the long term, there are likewise perils, none more significant than the cost to the taxpayers of Queensland."
