In December 2018, Workers First and the Australian Prison Officers Association (APOA) travelled to South Australia via road, visiting New South Wales and Victorian members on the journey down and back to Queensland head office.
A constant query we had made with members, was their position on the use of barriers and ‘safe zones’ within accomodation and security units throughout Australian prisons.
New SoutH wales Prison Officers told us that they believed there should be ‘every effort made to make our workplaces as safe as possible’ whilst Victorian and South Australian members expressed the same concern and position, Victorian and South Australian Prison Officers were concerned about the changing attitudes of the Departments in their State.
The all too familiar shift away from a focus on the safety of Prison Officers for the want of a more warm and fluffy (tuck you in at night) environment with the facilities was prevenlant and a current affair for Prison Officers in those states.
Part of our philosophy to improve safety within Australia’s prisons is to consult, consult, consult with all Prison Officers and invite input from all stakeholders, including the very communities our people protect through the efficient and effective execution of their duties.
We are inviting all citizens to offer their support for safer workplaces in Australian prisons and will be launching a significant media campaign throughout 2019 to address this growing crisis that is resulting in serious life threatening injuries to prison staff and prisoners themselves.
To offer your support and for official media comments on these important concerns of Prison Officers, call Brian Newman on 07 3807 3807 or email gethelp@prisonofficers.org.au
