The Australian Prison Officers Association has applauded the South Australian Government and their campaign to assist in the training of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to become Correctional Services Officers.

 This might be better known to those of us who were around for the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody as "recommendation number 100".

There were 339 recommendations which were made following the Royal Commission, many of which have never been fully implemented.

The South Australian Government initiative to renew the recruitment efforts for indigenous Prison Officers is refreshing to say the least.

The national rate of indigenous prisoners is presently at 27%, yet most Prisons in Australia have only a very small percentage of indigenous correctional service officers employed.

Employing more indigenous officers can only be seen as a positive move.
